about

When it comes to the music I listen to I am more than a bit of a genre nut. Unfortunately I have a tendency to do the same thing with the music I write. Many times ill sit down and say “ok to day im gonna write a punk, anti-folk, power pop etc. song”. I don’t think this is always a bad thing as it’s given my last few releases a structure that my earlier stuff didn’t have. By this I mean the last two things ive put out (Demons To Diamonds and Lets Do This!) sound like albums instead of just song collections. With Catholic Reflexes I said fuck it on the genre front and just went for a lyrical theme instead of a musical theme. Im not really sure if that makes this a concept album or not but this record definitely has a more diversity and I think a better flow than any of my previous releases. The lyrics center on the idea of thoughts and impulses generally attributed to Catholicism such as guilt, shame, and regret. I was raised catholic and though Im a tentative agnostic these days with no real spiritual alignment I find myself doing and feeling things that are definitely a result of my religious upbringing. My friend Zachariah dubs these impulses Catholic Reflexes thus the album title and theme. There are two other key differences with this album. The first thing is that I did differently this time around is use characters in some of these songs where as in the past ive only written about myself or other real people. The second is that with the exception of Run Forest Run, which I wrote a few years back all of these songs, were written since I got sober in august of 2017. I think these two things have made it a bit easier to be honest with myself and try to exercise some stuff that have been crushing me. I truly believe this is the best thing ive done thus far in any aspect of my life. It’s definitely what im most proud of producing. I hope you enjoy the tunes!
